arete (excellence). They differ from the pre-Socratics because of their focus on human affairs, and, unlike Plato, sought an empirical understanding of phenomena fully aware that neither our senses nor language permit us to access fully-objective Truth with a capital T. Despite their shifting fortunes in Classical scholarship, they’re a motley crew of genuinely interesting figures who sought for the first time to make sense of human beings as human beings (it was Protagoras who said “man is the measure of all things”) while still participating fully in the public life of democratic Athens.
